The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently issued more than $150 million in final determinations for whistleblower bounties. Between July and September of this year, the CFTC issued ten of these awards to whistleblowers who brought important information to the agency that led to successful enforcement actions.
In the most recent order, signed on September 14, 2026, only one of the five whistleblowers received an award. This whistleblower submitted “significant information” that “was the crucial evidence that led Division staff directly to the successful prosecution” of the defendant. The order noted that the charge “is first of its kind in CFTC history.”
The next two orders were both signed on September 11, 2026.
- In the first order, three whistleblowers received awards for their contributions to a successful enforcement action. None had any negative actions that mitigated their awards. Two of the whistleblowers also submitted some information regarding “industrywide practices” that were involved in related covered actions.
- In the second order, four whistleblowers received awards after “providing significant information” including one who “provided significant eyewitness information.” Two received deductions for “culpability.”
Two orders were finalized on July 31, 2026.
- The first order included an award for only one whistleblower who provided significant information and assistance to the agency’s staff when requested. The other three were denied because they did not meet the requirements.
- The second order included an award because the whistleblower information “helped substantially with the investigation.” This individual also voluntarily participated in interviews and flew in for meetings with staff and served as a witness.
Three other orders during the period were denials of all claimants.
“The Commission’s Whistleblower Program is having a record year under new leadership,” said CFTC’s General Counsel Tyler Badgley. “Despite inheriting a substantial backlog, the newly invigorated Whistleblower Office has moved to promptly and efficiently process awards for whistleblowers and will continue to do so in the upcoming year.”
